About ORT: Then and Now, Here and There

For almost 100 years, the ORT family here in the United States has been the ORT network's largest private contributor and strong supporter of ORT programs on the local, national and international stage. The global nature of ORT is easily illustrated by even the briefest overview of programs conducted across the network.

World ORT programs enrich communities by educating the individuals within them. These programs reach out to young at-risk students in Tel Aviv, provide teachers with the latest advances in classroom technology and help adult immigrants in the United States adjust to their new language and home.

Through its network of schools and training centers, World ORT meets the needs of over 300,000 students -- young and old, from every corner of the world so that they can compete in today's rapidly changing market. As vast as this global network is, World ORT still adapts its programming to the individual needs and challenges of each community and so is uniquely equipped to help students succeed in their local economy.  This flexibility and adaptability is nothing new. Since it's earliest days in the 1880s, ORT has adjusted its core curriculum to keep pace with developing technologies, changing demands of the workplace and the unique needs of the society in which it operates.

It's not simply about economic success however. ORT's curriculum emphasizes culture alongside academic achievement, creating not only productive workers, but people who, in addition to having successful careers, will become community leaders. ORT America is an integral part of that effort, providing the funds and leadership to make that happen, today and in the future.

The American story of ORT began in New York City in the 1920s with the founding of American ORT in 1922 and Women’s American ORT created in 1927. Together these organizations built a nationwide network of committed, passionate supporters for the work ORT was doing all over the world.

ORT Through
the Years

ORT's 130th anniversary is next year and we're getting in the mood with a stroll down memory lane - otherwise known as the ORT America archives with pieces from annual yearbooks and issues of The ORT Reporter.

When they merged in 2007, they created ORT America -- a single unified presence for ORT in the United States. Still working hard, still committed to the same important work but with even greater focus and redoubled efforts.
